***Freedom to Love

Cassandra’s Freedom to Love, a wonderful tangle of male lovers, is the model for the larger than life Freedom to Love Monument Project, which aspires to create a shrine for practicing the right to remembrance of those who have passed from AIDS or homophobic violence. Its objective is to raise a monument to the freedom to love and the love of freedom, to the lives extinguished by vicious fanatics, to the bravery of those who live with HIV/AIDS… and to those who are gone but still here.

SOULJA, Cassandra’s Peace and Love Warriors, is a one woman show at the ¡Buen Vivir! Gallery for Contemporary Art, featuring bronze sculptures, large prints and mobile murals for social movements, which bear witness to an astounding personal galaxy. Cassandra is committed to producing empowering metaphors, be they altars or monuments that explore the full gamut of liberation. Whether painting murals for garment workers, casting bronze to commemorate indigenous resistance or sculpting the freedom to love, she wields the power of the image to invite the beholder to see, feel and act.

SOULJA addresses issues relevant to the Latino community such as the dialogue with the ancestresses and ancestors; the labyrinth of identity; immigration, the expropriation of the lands and territories of peasants and Indigenous Peoples; the right to remembrance; and how we in the North live the legacy of the struggles of our countries of origin.Although originally from New York, artistically speaking Cassandra considers herself “Made in Mexico.” She studied at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in Mexico City and painted with the Mexican muralism workshop Ojos de Lucha. Cassandra has also shown at the East/West Gallery in London, the Chopo Museum in Mexico City, the Leslie Lohman Gallery in New York and smack dab in the middle of nowhere. The artist-in-residence at BAAD! in the South Bronx for over a decade, her current studio is in Red Hook.
SOULJA runs through July 29th  and concludes with a closing reception.

SOULJA: Luchadores por la Paz y el Amor

SOULJA, Luchadores por la Paz y el Amor, es una exhibición de Cassandra en la Galería ¡Buen Vivir! de Arte Contemporánea. La obra que incluye esculturas de bronce y murales móviles de los movimientos sociales de America Latina, crea una galaxia artística asombrosa. Cassandra se dedica a producir metáforas concientizadoras, altares y monumentos, que exploran la gama infinita de liberación. Sea pintando murales para costureras, fundiendo bronce para conmemorar la resistencia indígena o esculpiendo la libertad de amar, ella esgrima el poder de la imagen para invitar al espectador a ver, sentir y actuar.

SOULJA aborda temas sumamente relevantes a la comunidad latina tales como el dialogo con las y los ancestros; el laberinto de la identidad; la inmigración; el despojo de las tierras y territorios de los campesinos y los Pueblos Indígenas; el derecho a la memoria histórica; y cómo nosotros en el Norte vivimos el legado de lucha de nuestros países de origen.

Aunque originalmente de Nueva York, artísticamente Cassandra se considera “Hecha en México” porque estudió en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” en La Ciudad de México y pintó con el taller de muralismo mexicano Ojos de Lucha. Cassandra también ha expuesta obra en la Galería East/West en Londres, el Museo Chopo en México, el Museo Leslie Lohman en Nueva York y en las calles del mundo.
